Also on Tuesday, an Iranian drone struck a parking lot next to the American Embassy in Dubai, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed to reporters.

U.S. diplomats, as well as Democratic lawmakers, questioned why embassy closures and travel alerts for American citizens hadn’t been issued sooner, especially considering the U.S. spent weeks building up its military forces in the region. Some Democrats cautioned that the conflict could turn into yet another “forever war,” siphoning American resources to the Middle East indefinitely.

Already, six American service members have been killed, and President Donald Trump has warned there would likely be more deaths. The American Embassy in Riyadh also was attacked by two drones, resulting in fire and minor material damage to its building. Further afield, in Pakistan, anti-U.S. protesters tried to storm the American consulate in Karachi, one of multiple demonstrations throughout the country that at times turned deadly.

The U.S. mission in Saudi Arabia also warned Tuesday of an imminent threat of “missile and UAV attacks over Dhahran,” a key Saudi oil hub, urging Americans to take cover at home and refrain from going outside.

Many current and former U.S. diplomats agreed, and blamed the travel crisis on the Trump administration’s sidelining of career State Department employees and its decision to limit its policy-making process to just a handful of people.

It could have taken actions in all these areas to protect Americans and it didn’t.” He also pointed out that the State Department has not held a press briefing in months; such sessions could have helped explain the situation to Americans abroad.

Meanwhile, airlines have not gotten word yet on whether their commercial and charter planes will be used for evacuations abroad, according to two airline industry officials, granted anonymity to discuss ongoing planning with the Pentagon and State Department.

A spokesperson for USTRANSCOM, a unified combatant command, told POLITICO that the military program that uses commercial air carriers for transportation needs, known as the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, has not been activated.

Trump has said the military operation could continue for four to five weeks. “The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday.
