Fenix 5x + Chinese Language 04-25-2018, 03:29 PM Hey guys,
Just loaded a map of Taiwan into my watch and all I get are these diamond shaped symbols. No Chinese text.
Does anyone know how I can enable Chinese? Surely, the watch being made in Taiwan, it's got to be possible, no???
I did a quick Google search and lots of people are complaining about it. I think I also see people with custom firmware?? Not sure if I trust that.
Thanks!
EDIT:
Just spoke to someone at Garmin and they told me that a Chinese version of the firmware is required for Asian languages, which requires an Asian version of the watch. The rep did tell me that Garmin is also open to ideas and that as users submitting ideas gets more eyeballs than anything a rep can add to their notes. So, if you are at all interested in getting Asian language support, submit the idea here: http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/ If enough of us get the idea in, they'll add it. Hey, any luck with this? I recently purchased a Fenix 5X Plus from the States, but will be staying in Taiwan for a while. I got some open street maps from a third-party source that looks pretty legit, but all the street names are displayed as diamond-shaped blocks with question marks on them. Same with push notifications and message previews from my phone.
I tried contacting Garmin Customer Support (US end), and they told me that my watch would not be able to display Chinese characters. The solution they offered me was to purchase a watch in Taiwan instead (which is pretty stupid, seeing that I only got this watch about 2 months ago).
Really sucks, as this is most likely just a language pack problem. I don't really see the necessity of having the hardware region-locked. What about people who frequently travel? Or need to be relocated for work (like in my case)?
Like, I wouldn't even mind PAYING for these language packs (as long as they don't cost as much as a new watch). I would happily pay for the convenience of having the option of being able to display both English and Chinese (which is possible seeing that the Taiwanese version can do this natively).
