I had this problem, and tried lots of different things and nothing solved it, so I created an app for this: Wear Black when Charging

This of course doesn't completely switches the screen off (I haven't found a way to do that), but instead it will show a black screen.
Other apps (like Slumber) didn't work for me, because the Moto charging app would launch on top of it.
I created a timeout so that the black screen would be launched after a few seconds (configurable).
Give it a try and let me know if you have any troubles.
