I texted Manny Ramirez today to congratulate him on his return to U.S. baseball; the 12-time All-Star, who was with the A’s last spring and then with Sacramento the first half of last year, signed a minor-league deal with Texas today.
To my surprise, instead of texting, he called me and said, “I’m so happy, I’m so happy I’m back – I couldn’t sleep for two days I was so excited.”
Of his experience in Taiwan and his struggles to get back to the majors after two-plus years, Ramirez said, “You have just got to put yourself in the fire to see what you have.”
Ramirez said that his team in Taiwan did not have a home stadium, so every game was a road game (not unusual there, I’m told), and he even had to wash his own uniform. “I certainly learned a lot,” Ramirez said. “I liked it there, the fans, the people there treated me good, but Triple-A is going to be so nice after Taiwan, having to travel every day.”
Ramirez has become very religious since his suspension in 2011 and, he said, “Before I went to Taiwan, I prayed and said to God, ‘If you want me to play, open the door,’ and then that door opened, and now there is this door opening.”
He also talked to the Nationals, he said; he believes Washington had some interest in him as a pinch hitter.
Brandon Moss, who played with Ramirez in Boston and last year with Sacramento, said, “I think it’s great. He’s obviously done some things and he’s paid his price, but he still loves this game. I think Manny has a different perspective on things than he did in the past. He’s always treated me great, I think he’s a good person. And if he can still play, let him play.”
此外Susan Slusser對曼尼說到每場球賽都要移動的部分加了個註解,表示她早已知道此事(not unusual there, I'm told)。從這一段裡看到曼尼最受不了的是每天移動的比賽,從Susan Slusser引述曼尼親口說的"...but Triple-A is going to be so nice after Taiwan, having to travel every day."

Manny speaks: 'You're in Taiwan, and you come to Triple A, this is like the big leagues' (呆過台灣以後再來到3A,這裡就像大聯盟)

Columnist Kevin Sherrington attended the Round Rock Express' news conference announcing the signing of Manny Ramirez.
Here's some of what Ramirez had to say:
On playing in Taiwan(關於台灣經驗): “It’s a great experience, let me tell you. Once you go overseas, everything change. But I really appreciate the way those people in Taiwan treat me. It’s awesome. I really can’t talk bad about the way they treat me.”
* * *
“Let me tell you, once you’re in Taiwan, and you come to Triple A, this is like the big leagues. Over there in the stadium, no A/C, no food. But I’m just happy to be here.”(這一段是指台灣球場沒有空調沒東西吃,但即使如此他還是很高興)
* * *
How bad did you want to get back?(你有多想要回來(指回美國打球)?)
“Bad, bad, bad(超想、超想、超想回來....). Like I always say you gotta go through the fire first(暗指回美國前的一切都是試煉,那台灣也算是煉獄之一嗎??), then when you come out, blessings come(他熬過來了,祝福也降臨). I went through a tough time, I learned from it and I’m moving on.”(我歷經苦難但也從中學到東西,現在我要向前邁進了)
* * *
“What I learned was once you’re in the storm (這裡的"風暴"應該泛指禁藥風波之後的日子). . . it’s good, because it makes you grow up and make you decide which way you have to go. The thing that I learned when I was in the storm, I learned how to listen, go and pray to God. I didn’t listen to people on the outside, and that helped me a lot.”
* * *
Any adjustments to your hitting approach?
“Not really. I just try to be myself. I don’t make any changes. Sometimes I watch (Raul) Ibanez and (Jason) Giambi and see they’re still doing good so I put that on my mind and say, ‘Why not?’ I just do what I always do."
