Project Syndicate 20200907
Dear Editor,
Your fine magazine has cooperated with “Wealth Magazine” in Taiwan, allowing them to translate your articles in Chinese under the exclusive license, but it seems they did not translate the articles precisely and maliciously distort the original meaning of the authors.
The world has already used the term “Covid-19” instead of discriminatory wording as China Virus or Wuhan Pneumonia except some politicians, but Wealth Magazine is still using Wuhan Pneumonia in their whole publications including your articles in Chinese version and proclaims thatit is their unbreakable policy.
Reading your articles translated in Chinese using the term of Wuhan Pneumonia mentioning under your exclusive license in their magazines, it seems Project Syndicate and the authors are using the term of Wuhan pneumonia and standing in line with the discriminatory prejudice. Are Project Syndicate and the authors standing with the malicious distortion term, if not,Wealth Magazinehas seriously damaged the credibility of Project Syndicate as an outstanding news agency, you should have Wealth Magazine stop translating the term Covid-19 into Wuhan pneumonia and request their apology of this immoral act of disrespecting and abusing the mutual trust.
If Project Syndicate agrees with Wealth Magazine, I appreciate if you could convey my letter to Professor Kenneth Rogoff, I really would like to know how Professor Rogoff thinks about this issue.
Thank you very much
Regards,
Dear A,
Thanks for your message. We have already taken this up with Wealth Magazine and they apologised and will use the correct phrasing moving forward.
I did however notice that most media in Taiwan (non-partners of PS) are using this incorrect term. So it seems like a Taiwan-wide problem.
Anyway, thanks for your interest in Project Syndicate and glad we were able to rectify this particular issue.
Kind Wishes,
Christianna Polydorou | Global Relations Manager |
Dear Ms. Christianna,
Thank you for your kind and prompt reply on September 7 regarding the apology of Wealth Magazine .
I have just called Wealth Magazine whether they have apologized to you as you mentioned in your letter about the translations of COVID-19 to Wuhan Pneumonia, they refused to confirm the apology and said in their letter “they did not use the exact wording of apology, but only communicated with you for their behaviors and they will respect the authors afterwards.
It seems like Wealth Magazine does not appreciate the credibility of a responsible news agency but also humiliate this issue.
In your letter, you mentioned that most of media using the incorrect terms, unfortunately it is an incorrect interpretation, the Tsai regime has deliberately used the incorrect term to advocate the sentiment of belittling and hating China, and only a few media follow this malicious wording just as echoes of this discriminatory valley without any independent thinking, Wealth Magazine is among one of them.
I appreciate that if you can forward their letter to me, so I could clarify whether they sure will change their policy, or you could confirm whether Wealth Magazine did state an apology, if they did not, will you still cooperate with this malicious and discriminatory magazine in the future? Thank you.
Regards,
Dear Mr. C,
Your initial request about contacting Wealth Magazine to address their reference to COVID-19 as it related to Project Syndicate content was handled in a timely manner and you were informed as such. We made our position with them clear and our request to avoid using pejorative terms to refer to COVID-19 in licensed Project Syndicate commentaries was unequivocal as it is a betrayal of the original texts. That said, we are not responsible for Wealth’s editorial decisions, nor their capacity to apologize in a manner you deem acceptable.
We appreciate your bringing this to our attention but consider this matter closed. If you have further concerns about the content of Wealth Magazine’s publication, it is best to contact them directly.
Subsequent communication on this subject from you will be handled by our attorney.
Thank you and all the best,
Jonathan
