The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has signed the revised agreement with defence contractors in China to resume Thailand's submarine procurement project, which has stalled for some time over a dispute over engine specifications.
The new deal, which was approved by the Thai cabinet on Aug 5, was signed at the headquarters of China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co (CSOC) in Beijing on Tuesday, according to a post on RTN's official Facebook page on Thursday.
The government was represented by Adm Jirapol Wongwit, the commander-in-chief of the RTN, while CSOC's executive vice president, Liu Song, signed on behalf of China.
The revised contract allows construction of the Yuan-class S26T submarines ordered by the navy to continue with significant changes, said Adm Jirapol. The most critical modification is the replacement of the German-made MTU396 diesel engine -- which could not be exported due to restrictions imposed in 2021 -- with a Chinese-made CHD620 diesel engine.
The revised contract also extends the construction deadline by 1,217 days, or about 40 months, from the original timeline. Delivery of the first submarine is now scheduled for late 2028.
The procurement contract was originally signed as a government-to-government deal in 2017, with a price tag of 13.5 billion baht.

修訂後的合約也將建造期限比原定時間延長了1217天，約40個月。首艘潛艦的交付時間目前定於2028年底。
該採購合約最初於2017年作為政府間協議簽署，總價值為135億泰銖。
