8.1 GDR2 goes official, but only for some Even though Microsoft has been busy with Windows 10 for smartphones, up to the point where we already have an ETA for the next preview, it doesn’t mean that the company wasn’t committed to bringing its Update 2 (GDR2) to existing handsets while that happens. We covered some of the changes we expected to find on GDR2 a couple of months ago, but we weren’t certain as to when we could expect the update. Microsoft has made Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 2 official today, but not all the news are positive.
First of all, if you want to rock this update today, you’ll have to buy either the Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL that were recently announced. Other than that, Microsoft hasn’t provided any launch details for other Windows Phones. One thing we did hear though is that this update won’t be available to all Windows Phones, and at the moment we only know that the Lumia 735 and Lumia 830 will receive the update. It’s hard to understand what limitations would pull Microsoft from launching the update to flagships like the Lumia 930, but it would make sense to assume that the company wants to focus its resources on Windows 10.
