Saab's new Phoenix platform can cater for all size models from a 9-3 but it cannot shrink down to accommodate a small car. The Swedish company is currently seeking a joint venture or co-operative deal with another supplier - possibly BMW among others left over from the GM transition - to secure the future for the as-yet-named small car due around 2014.
The only agreement Saab has signed with another car company to date is for BMW to supply a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine for the new-generation 9-3 due late next year.
Saab Cars Australia managing director Stephen Nicholls said last week that a sub-9-3 small car would be important to Saab's future.
"Simon Padian [head of Saab brand design] and his team has already done the designs for it. So we know what we want it to look like, we know what type of car it needs to be. But it's how to engineer it and how to finance it are the questions for us at the moment".
大概看了一下,好像是說9-2現在還無法在new Phoenix platform量產,還要尋求合作開發對象..
明年新改款之後的9-3,將搭載BMW1.6升的渦輪汽油引擎,SAAB的未來就靠它了..
