Developed in conjunction with the forthcoming Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, the new Cayenne S Hybrid uses Audi’s supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 325bhp and 324lb ft. It is assisted by an electric motor with 38kW and 184lb ft. Combined, the two produce 375bhp – just 20bhp shy of the Cayenne S’s 4.8-litre V8.

Unlike standard petrol-engined versions of the new Cayenne, which continue to use a multi-plate clutch to apportion drive, the Cayenne S Hybrid and Cayenne S Diesel use a lighter and more easily packaged Torsen four-wheel drive system similar to that used in the Audi Q7.

And in a departure from rival hybrid systems, the petrol-electric drivetrain developed by Porsche and Volkswagen decouples the eight-speed automatic gearbox from the engine on a trailing throttle at speeds up to 98mph.
