New Audi A4 will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Audi is counting down to the launch of its most important volume car, the new Audi A4. Underpinning the A4 is an all-new platform, undergoing hot weather tests beneath this prototype. Dubbed MLP for modular platform for longitudinally mounted engines, this matrix is highly flexible. Modules for electronics, axles, drivetrains and suspensions are all interchangeable, allowing Audi to customise the architecture for each model.

To improve handling, the engine/gearbox are moved back towards the firewall, creating a front/mid-engine layout and cutting the front overhang. The transmission and differential swap places, too. Other changes include an all-new four-link front suspension and revised rear axle, a new steering rack, stronger brakes with a more pronounced rear wheel bias and a 40:60 torque split for Quattro AWD models.

The new A4 will be less front-heavy than the current model, mainly because the gearbox and the differential will exchange positions, and the engine will be moved rearwards, so will result more space between the front wheel and the cockpit.

Inside the new A4 it will be more of the same from Audi; world-class interior treatments will grace the A4 and each of its variants. The cabin will be very similar to the A5's with a more raked center console, an all-new climate control and audio center stack and more distinctive gauges.

Last, the engines: the 4 cylinder direct injection engines, both turbocharged and naturally aspirated, will have power outputs ranging from 115 to 215 hp; the turbodiesel TDI engines will have between 120 and 245 hp; the V6 and V8 gasoline engines will have between 250 and 500 hp. Available transmissions will include a 6-speed manual, multitronic and Audi's newest S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Audi have confirmed that the next generation Audi A4 will make its worldwide debut in the fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
