A Highland whisky has been named the world's greatest.
Old Pulteney was once banned in its home town of Wick after Navy gunboats were called in to keep sozzled locals in order.
Now the 21-year-old single malt has been lauded by The Whisky Bible 2012.
Author Jim Murray - who tasted more than 1200 new drams before picking the winner - said: "It exploded from the glass with vitality, charisma and class."
The distillery in Caithness is the most northerly in mainland Britain.
It opened in 1826 but churchmen claimed locals were soon guzzling 500 gallons of the whisky a DAY.
Author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote in 1892 that Wick was "one of the meanest of man's towns".
He added: "Fights are common, riots often possible ... even when I was there, a gunboat lay in the bay to assist the authorities."
The final straw came when a mob pelted a US antialcohol campaigner with rotten fruit.
Parish chiefs banned all booze from the town's shops and pubs in 1922 - and the lockout lasted for 25 years.
The distillery shut in 1930 but reopened in 1951 and whisky is the town's biggest export. A spokesman for Pulteney said: "We are delighted.
"It is a tribute to the craftsmanship we have honed over the centuries and the character the town lends to our whisky."
The worldbeating malt costs £74.99.
Best blend went to Ballantine's Finest from Dumbarton.
