In previous generation, you can see that camera producer reduce to pixel density (by producing larger size sensor, or just simplest and cheapest way, reduce the resolution) to reduce the noise level.
But this takes toll to the resolution (sharpness you can say) of the image.
I think this generation, Sony has certain breakthrough overcoming pixel density vs. noise. Sony ables to produce high pixel density sensor with low noise. So the noise level for TX100v is similar to TX9, but thanks to higher resolution, you can see more details of the picture.
From one of the test website, TX100v resolution is up to 2,800 LW/PH, which is higher than many DSLR with mid range lens.
