Use 3 modes and flip between them on the dial.
1. P mode for general purpose shooting.
Set M size (5mp).
Set Auto ISO 1600. If you don't shoot people, you can try auto ISO 800 or even 400, but be warned that shooting long requires decent shutter speeds to get a statistically high success rate.
Set DR400.
2. EXR DR mode for super harsh sunlight.
Sets M size for you.
Set DR800. this is the secret for handling brutal sunlight.
Does not matter what you do with auto ISO because cam will use ISO 200 at all times.
3. M mode for special effects, concerts and long or critical exposures.
Set M size.
Set ISO as appropriate.
Set aperture wide open unless you need to slow the shutter midday.
Set shutter where you need it.
For concerts, I like shutter speeds around 1/100s to freeze the band's motion.
