Re: System booting forever? Post by p51aviator » Fri Oct 22, 2010 3:37 pm
I'm closing the loop on this for those that may have a similar problem.
My TS-639 Pro just up and died. When I cycled power, I got NO lights and just booting>>>>> on the display forever and the fans were running at high. No beeps and couldn't see anything on a monitor I connected.
Because the fans were spinning and I saw a LAN light flicker I was convinced it wasn't the power supply and had to be the main board. I had a pretty hefty email exchange with QNAP over this and after answering their diagnostics questions, I was further convinced the main board (motherboard) had given up.
BOY WAS I WRONG!!!
Being an IT guy, I decided to crack it open and just double check everything. Man - there ain't much to these things once you get the case apart. Had the MB out in a few minutes and scoured it for any signs of an issue (capacitors, whatever) - and it looked like new. Decided to reseat the ram (which is spec'd at 1GB and somehow I managed to get 2GB - go figure) - yes, there is a second slot below for a mem upgrade - and put it all back together. At this point I was shooting for the "loose connector" theory. Powered it up - nothing. This time I did happen to notice one key thing. The fan on the internal power supply was NOT spinning. Ah-Ha!
Went upstairs and tore apart another PC to get the power supply, hauled it down to the QNAP and plugged it in. Guess what? Yes - successful boot! The Booting>>>>> was the result of a failed power supply after all, and the diagnostics steps didn't really catch it at all.
So - QNAP quoted me a non-warranty repair of $550.00 to fix and I'm happy to say that if you need a power supply they are for sale on the QNAP site here for $159.00.
At this point, I did a bit more research (since I have it in pieces and all) and the power supply is an off-the-shelf component for the most part and you can buy them here in the US (for about $60.00). You will need to mod the off-the-shelf power supply to make it work (about 1.00 worth of parts), but you can save a good amount of money if you are inclined to do so. The TS-639 Pro uses a FSP220-60LE power supply with a modified connector. Basically there is a 24 pin and a 20 pin connector coming out. The 24 pin is normal and goes to the MB. The 20 pin supplies power to the drive rail.
I'm going to build one this week and test it in my TS-639 Pro. This will also probably work for the TS-439 Pro as they are basically the same system. I'll do a DIY for the power supply mod if anybody is interested. Also, since I have it completely torn apart it's mod/photo time. I'll post some pics of the guts of this thing soon as well in case you are curious.
