2010 M35

Today, let's talk about a different topic...

As I saw some people complained the new Z suspension was TOO SOFT, I would like to take some deep look at it!!!

Believe it or not, after I take some research from Internet, I can guess the ride frequency of the car!!! First, I check the spring rates of RSR Ti2000 DOWN springs for the car which are usually 10-20% stiffer than OEM springs. 10-20% stiffer springs usually increase higher 5-10% ride frequency. I also have my own excel sheet to calculate the ride frequency of the car...

You can reference the below video. (Actually, I'd already have my own calculate formula and data before I saw this video!!! After I saw this video, I confirmed my existing formula and data were correct!!!)

Then, I calculated the ride rates of the new Z for non-Nismo and Nismo models... Guess what... Actually Nissan increased the ride rates of the new Z a little bit!!!

So, the new Z definitely is NOT softer but more COMFORTABLE!!!(I think some people were completely in a WRONG direction!!!)

I also test drove a few new Z Nismo... They're definitely NOT very comfortable!!!

You also can find Honda raised the ride rate of Civic Type R FL5 a little bit in the below. Actually ride rate of new Z is higher than Type R but you may feel Z is more comfortable. The key is THE DAMPERS!!!

The below is two very extreme examples...

My F suspension is FIGS Ohlins the ride rate of which is about 2.2, but the ride rate of Miata(ND) is about 1.2 which is way way much softer. However, my wife said my F was much more comfortable!!!

So, I think the dampers of Miata should be quite stiff and should be inferior to Ohlins dampers. Another reason,I think, is... F is also way more heavy... More weight will increase ride comfort and high speed stability!!! (Now, I suddenly find the heavy weight could become your friend for some very stiff suspensions!!!)

You may also find the ride rates of Ohlins suspensions consistently become around 2.0-2.4 for almost every car except SUVs!!! Guess what... 2.0-2.4 is 911 GT3 territory!!! I guess Ohlins should use 911 GT3 as the benchmark for their DFV suspensions !!!

The below is ride rates for 911s, Caymans for your reference...

You should find their ride rates are actually quite different for different models!!! (Just like Nissan... NOT every Nissan is created equally!!! Of course!!!)

As my wife complained about the family car like suspension of new Accord, but not the very stiff Ohlins suspension of F car, I have to brag my Ohlins a little bit again!!!

Of course, 911 GT3 suspension is definitely more refined OVERALL but actually Ohlins has A LOT OF advantages as the below!!!

1. Much cheaper than buying a 911 GT3
2. I can adjust ride height freely from very low to even a little higher than OEM height
3. I can adjust damping by my finger tips easily. When I test drove a 911 GT3, I think it's not very comfortable. For Ohlins, I can set any damping rate from very soft to very stiff. All depend on what you like!!!
4. I think many people should already know the damping force of their cars could become weaker and weaker as their cars getting old. Now, adjustable damping becomes very important. Recently, I just turned 1 click stiffer for F&R of my Ohlins!!! Every time I make my Ohlins a little stiffer to compensate the damping loss, guess what... My car becomes live again and feels like A NEW CAR!!!
5. To get a GT3 like suspension, you have to buy a very impractical car such as 911 or Ferrari. But, Ohlins could give you GT3 like suspension for many much more practical cars!!!

No wonder some 911 GT3 owners still seek for some good aftermarket suspensions like Ohlins!!! The reason is NOT because Ohlins is better than OEM... I think the reason is they want THAT FLEXIBILITY!!!

(I just checked the price of FIGS Ohlins from its web site... Guess what... They raised the price AGAIN!!! Now it's 4250USD!!! When I bought it in around 2020, it's only around 3250USD!!!)
The below is 2025 Accord vs 2025 Camry from C&D...

------------

What isn't measurable but is noted in our logbooks is that Accord offers a more exuberant driving experience. It's tight and flat around corners, responding to light steering and throttle inputs like it's been studying at the school of sports cars. The downside to all of this athleticism is that the Accord has a firmer ride compared with the Camry's softer side. Maybe it's taken a few electives in handling, but its major was something more comfortable. Depending on your commute and the roads to travel it, the Camry's more easygoing ride could be worth giving up a little of Accord's quick reflexes. Toyota's available all-wheel drive could also be a reason to choose the Camry over the Accord for those living with severe winter weather.

----------

Be honest... I never feel that way in my son's Accord which is exactly the same model, Sport Hybrid, in C&D review!!! In my opinion, Accord should be a little more nimble than Camry but the difference should definitely be SUBTLE!!!

PS: Why didn't we choose Camry??? In 2024 fall, all the new Camrys were sold like A HOT CAKE!!! One of Toyota sales managers even yelled at us although we drove a F car at the time!!! (Another reason is... My son is actually a good bargainer... I NEVER thought he was!!!)
I would like share my personal experience...

As my son now faces some difficulty in his life, I tell him not to feel bad!!! Do you know why Japanese cars are so reliable??? That's because they have to do many things more than one time!!! Some people can do things right at the first time but they just cannot!!! So, if you have to do things more times than those people who only need to do once. In a long run... You will do things much better than those more talented people!!!

Why do I know this... Actually when I came to US, I was already over 40 year old and that was also my SECOND attempt!!! Believe it or not... Just like many important stages in my life... I usually had to try them at least TWICE!!!

I also would like to tell anyone who wants to immigrate to US... Working in the US is actually NOT easy... This environment gives you ONLY ONE CHANCE!!! That's it!!! If you fail, you have to go back and do a lot of preparation for the second try!!! That's why it took so long for my second try!!! And, that's why my son just don't want to give up on his FIRST TRY!!! (Even though my son already has MS engineering degree from a BEST OF THE BEST school!!!)
