Very old used M35!!!

Of course, those Nissan 3.0tt we discussed were stock, not tuned engines...

If you tune those engines, they could become as fast as GT-Rs until the rpms reach 5500!!!

I just tried my son's G35S...

Actually I just needed to change the AT to DS mode which would automatically force 5AT to use the 4th gear... Be honest I seldom used that mode as constantly at the 5th gear and 3000 rpm on the highway is already quite fast most of the time...

So, I decided to use the 4th gear on the highway today.... Wow... It's so much fun especially at uphill!!! (although it's about 80% of the power of the 6th gear in GSF at SPORT+ mode...)

Coincidently, the 5th gear is also 80% of the 4th gear in 5AT from my son's G35S... So, in DS mode I will get additional 20% of the power on the highways which could let me overtake any slow car even easier than before!!!

I have to say... These combustion engines are so much fun...

The more researches I have done the more rewarding results I will get... (These will definitely improve my current driving skills a bit and also help me to make a correct decision for my wife's next car!!!)

Let's talk about Q50 hybrid...

Actually Q50 hybrid has very good torque until the rpm reaches 3500... However, those good low end torques are not really helpful for spirited driving on highways...

After 3500rpm the torque is about as good as 300GT which is about 300 ft-lb on wheel. The difference is after 5500rpm the torque will degrade more on 300GT... (Again, newer turbo design bite you now...) But, we usually don't use those high end performance except you're racing...

So, generally in dyno during 3500-5500rpm Q50 hybrid performs similar to 300GT...

Now, the real difference is the gear ratios...

The same 4th gear... The gear ratio in Q50 hybrid is higher than that in 300GT on wheel... (3400rpm vs 3800rpm)

So in the 4th gear Q50 hybrid is slower than 300GT but still better than my GSF default gear (the 6th gear) at SPORT+ mode...

So, to sum up if you use the 4 gear in Q50 with a V6 engine on highway, your Q50 should produce similar feeling or fun like my GSF at SPORT+ mode if not better...

Of course, I still can downshift to the 5th or 4th gear in my GSF... Then, my GSF will be faster than 300GT and 3.7 hybrid but not RS400... (To be faster than RS400 I have to push my GSF beyond 5500rpm to the redline 7300rpm!!!)

You may ask why I did so much study on these???

That's because I will buy another car for my wife soon (if my daughter has to attend her class in person next fall) and I love that SPORT+ mode from my GSF so much...

It looks like Q50/60 3.0tt will meet my requirement... (Even the 300hp engine is still good enough... )

Of course, I still need to push these Nissan engines some more like about 500-1500rpm higher... (depend on the engine)

3.7 NA : 1500 rpm higher
3.7 hybrid : 500 rpm higher
300GT : 800 rpm higher
RS400 : 1100 rpm higher (The 4th gear could be TOO FAST and becomes a bit scary!!! )

Sorry... I just found that the 5th gear in RS400 was about as good as 6th gear in my GSF... The 4th gear in RS400 is TOO FAST!!!

The rpm at 5th gear will also down to 3000rpm which about equals to the rpm at the 6th gear in my GSF...

So, for 3500-5500rpm in dyno both RS400 and GSF are similar... However, for 2500-3500rpm RS400 is better... For 5500rpm and beyond GSF is better...

Now, Let's talk about a very different car F30 335d...

335d has a 8AT and the 6th gear in its 8AT is about as the same speed range as the 4th gear in 300GT.

Yes. 335d's diesel engine has excellent torque 400-470lb-ft on wheel at 2000-4000rpm... However, that diesel engine has to operate at much lower rpm range than 300GT...(2500 vs 3800rpm)

So, after some gear ratio adjustments 335d's 6th gear is about as fast as 300GT's 4th gear...

However, 335d's diesel engine degrades a lot after 4000 rpm and a much lower redline 5000rpm... So, for high end performance like 100-200 test Q50 3.7(non-hybrid) could still be a little better than 300GT(new turbo design bites you again) and 300GT is better than 335d...

So, all these 300hp and 3700lbs sedans could make similar fun like my GSF's SPORT+ mode thanks to better modern ATs...

I wonder why many of those cars were slow on the highways???

Maybe they were just lazy on changing gears or didn't know about gearing just like my wife... Or maybe they need a stiffer suspension like Ohlins DFV to build up the confidence...

Or maybe those ATs didn't have aggressive lockups like my GSF's 8AT...

In addition, my GSF's has a decent ATF cooler from factory...

If you continuously play with your AT and keep it at lower gears constantly, you may need to install a ATF cooler... (keeping at lower gears in AT may increase slippages in the torque converter... Then, the slippages will generate more heat and the heat will deteriorate the ATF very quickly!!!)
