其實，真正的事實是跟戰爭沒有關係。跟某艘船有關係。

“GALVESTON departed Philadelphia on 23 July 1962, transited the Panama Canal for San Diego, Calif., and joined Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 9, U.S. Pacific Fleet, on 24 August 1962. She operated along the West Coast until October 1963 when she sailed for the Western Pacific as flagship of the flotilla. During the next 6 months she operated in the Far East with the 7th Fleet off Japan, Taiwan, and Okinawa. She returned to San Diego 16 April 1964 and resumed West Coast training...

Top Gun是部完全不講究考據的YA片。導演Tony Scott甚至在電影拍攝時，對前來抱怨片中演員飛行外套繡章亂貼的海軍軍官們說：本片是拍給在堪薩斯種小麥，搞不懂這些差別的農夫們看的，又不是拍給海軍飛行員看。由此可見一斑。

Maverick的外套背後確實貼著USS Galveston (CLG-3)飛彈巡洋艦在1963-1964年巡弋東亞的紀念章。以本片漫不在乎亂搞的程度，很可能因為看起來酷就放上去了。

若真的要找出點蛛絲馬跡，片中教官Viper跟Maverick說曾與他父親Duke Mitchell同在美國海軍第51戰鬥機中隊(VF-51)飛F-4參與越戰，當時部署在USS Oriskany (CV-34)航艦上。

USS Galveston在1965年七月至十二月間配屬第七艦隊，負責航艦防空、陸上目標砲擊支援以及海面搜救任務。1965年10月5日，配屬於USS Oriskany的美國海軍第162戰鬥機中隊(VF-162) Rick Adams少尉駕駛序號150848、戰術編號AH 227的Vought F-8E Crusader，在戰鬥任務中遭SA-2防空飛彈擊落跳傘落海，由直升機救援至USS Galveston上。這就是兩艘軍艦唯一有過交集的事件。自此兩艦在越南戰場就沒再照過面。
