RealD 3D on Cinemark XD screen.

Before i talk about RealD 3D I guess I should mention Cinemarks XD screens compared to Imax screens. Some of you are probably not familiar with this small but undoubtedly growing brand of large format screens, so ill share what ive been able to find out. And here is the official site:

http://www.cinemark.com/xd.asp

The projector used for XD screens are all 2k or 4k. 2k is the current industry standard for digital projection. Cinemark and other chains are actively upgrading all their projectors to 4k ones. The projector at this particular XD screen in Tucson uses the newer Barco DP-3000.

Some bits about just the XD auditorium: 400-500 seats, plush, super comfortable leather stadium seating, and JBL sound system with 30+ speakers.

Screen Sizes:

A standard Imax screen is about 70 feet wide and 50 feet high. As far as I know all XD screens are 70 feet wide and 38 feet tall. While digital "lieMax" screens are 58 feet wide and 28 feet tall.

Ok now to the RealD 3D XD viewing. One word. Extraordinary!

No doubt my experience was better than I would have had on a smaller screen, but screen size is not really the issue here. Ghosting? What ghosting? Strobbing/flickering? Nope. Motion blur...yes but MUCH less than Imax 3D or MasterImage Digital 3D. The scene were Sully points his wooden spear towards the audience not only had real 3D pop, but it was sharp and in focus. Not only that, something else completely unapparent in my first 2 3D viewings. A few seconds after sully points the spear at audience he turns around and starts running...and his back to audience with his tail waving through the air had great 3D pop and depth. In the Imax and MasterImage 3D this was completely unapparent due to the heavy motion blur. Another seen with more 3D pop and depth was the close up on one of those vicious cat like creatures.

In fact, every single frame that had 3D pop on Imax/MasterImage, had crisper, cleaner, sharper MORE APPARENT 3D pop on the RealD 3D. The effect of 3D depth was likewise better. The whole experience was just so much more refined. The RealD 3D viewing was the only one were I heard members of the audience go "oooooo" "ah thats amazing" "thats so nice" etc..During the Imax and MasterImage viewings audience was silent. The level of detail was also on par with the Imax. I did not have the same "wow there is so much more detail" reaction like I did coming from MasterImage to IMAX. This is probably due to a much brighter image due to the Barco DP-3000. I paid $14 for the RealD 3D XD, I would gladly have paid $24 had I know how much better the experience was going to be. I doubt I will ever go to Imax 3D again. Not until they remove the problems which film based, dual projections brings.

Keep in mind I did not think the Imax 3D was particularly blurry until I saw the RealD 3D presentation. I just felt like something was missing after the first two 3D viewings. I would watch and think to myself the filmmakers clearly intended the effect to be more pronounced but it just wasn't happening on the MasterImage or Imax screens. Then after I saw it on RealD 3D I found what was missing. The sound system was a tad better than the IMAX imo. Highs were more crisp, sepration was better. The scene were one of the navi throws the rope around sully's ankles causing him to fall over, I heard the rope wooshing from behind my right shoulder past me and towards the screen. it actuality made my jump a bit.

Needless to say, I cannot see myself ever going back to Imax 3D as the RealD 3D experience is simply better on all levels especially on a large screen like Cinemarks XD.
