I agree that iPhone's reception is not very stable, but like you, I love iPhone's OS and applications, which made it hard to give up even though it's not great as a phone.
Give Apple time, after all, they are only a baby in terms of designing cellphones, RF design takes some experience, I am sure they will get better with next generation of iPhones.
