每次聽到這首歌，我就想起一個故事:
在古代的中國，有一對貧窮的夫妻離開居住地前往異鄉，途中經過一棵大樹，這時候丈夫臨時有事想要一個人去某個地方，就交代妻子在那棵樹下等他，說他會再回來找她的，並且給妻子一些錢和一些食物，於是就離開了，留下妻子待在那棵樹下，不畏寒暑地等著丈夫回來，這途中，她手上被丈夫給的錢也被一位有心人士給騙走了，食物也吃完了，她靠著路人的施捨繼續過日子，即便日曬雨淋，依舊忠心地待在那棵樹下，等待她的丈夫來接她，在漫長無盡的等待裡，七年過去了....
在她因飢餓和口渴而無人施捨的情形下，她快死去的時候...
她的丈夫出現了，身上穿著華貴的衣服，而非當時的布衣，這時，他身邊多了一位妻子，旁邊還有他和那位女性生的孩子，顯然他們是路經過這棵樹..
這時，丈夫用平靜而略顯冷酷的語氣問快死去的舊妻，為什麼她還一直待在這裡....於是，她便死去了..
