雖然理論上 BCG - 卡介苗應該是 [安全的], 但是當 BCG 注射在有嚴重合併免疫缺乏症 [Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) ] 的嬰兒就會引起致命的感染. 這種副作用的發生機率大約是小於 1 ppm (一個病例/每百萬人注射). 由於注射 BCG - 卡介苗 有可能會引起免疫力不全嬰兒的嚴重感染 (P.S. BCG 是減毒活菌). 即使不接種 BCG 會提高 HIV 嬰兒得到肺結核的機會, WHO 仍然在於 2007 年停止建議給 HIV 嬰兒注射 BCG-卡介苗. 因為HIV 嬰兒被 BCG 減毒疫苗嚴重感染的機率約為 4,000 ppm 或是 0.4%!

The documented incidence of this happening is less than 1 per million immunizations given.[30] In 2007, The WHO stopped recommending BCG for infants with HIV, even if there is a high risk of exposure to TB,[31] because of the risk of disseminated BCG infection (which is approximately 400 per 100,000).[32][33]
