A 24-year-old Joseph Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (Joseph Stalin) photographed by the Batumi Regional Gendarmerie Department in 1902.
He began using the name Stalin, derived from the Russian word for steel (stal) which has been translated as "Man of Steel", in 1912 and continued to use the name for the rest of his life, possibly because it was used on the article that established his reputation among the Bolsheviks. Joseph Stalin became leader of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and remained in power until his death in March 1953.
