正確的用法應該是 1 - John made it a custom to do some reading before he went to bed.
就小弟所知英文裡並沒有 make <名詞> as 的用法 (跟 make it as soon as possible 這種用法不同，as soon as possible 跟make是分開的，第一個as 跟 make 並無文法上的關連)，因此只有第一個選擇是說得通的。 句中的it有點像是先丟出一個並未指出是何物的名詞 holder，在後面才說出這整件被當成習慣的it (made it a custom)是上床前要先閱讀一下這件事。

語言language，思想或思考過程thought，客觀事物reality 是三種不同的東西。比如，“飲料”在英文里是beverage 中文用 飲料，但兩者表達的是同一個概念，當讀文章時，腦袋出現的是概念，是圖像，是故事情節，而不是具體的工具 - 語言，就像談吉他時根本不會刻意思考應該如何移動指頭一樣。
新生嬰兒在開口說話之前，就已經開始思考周圍世界了，他會思考概念concept 以及事物是如何發生聯繫，產生關係的，成年人只是給了他工具language去表達這些concepts
一旦嬰兒掌握了某種語言，該語言里的概念、語法結構會先入為主地影響他的思維模式，讓他產生依賴性；因此，母語會對學習第二語言產生很大干擾。除此之外，在學習第二語言時，為了理解目標語言，初學者會處理語言間的轉換 - 一來一回，是兩次；只有完成這種轉換后才能獲取目標語言中的具體信息。
結論，且不談具體的學習方法，學習語言就是消除語言之間轉換的過程，就是把自己的思想直接轉換成第二語言這種工具的過程。當你覺得另外一種語言里的很多東西無法轉換成母語時，或認為轉換成母語有困難時，你的外語水平就進步很大了。
如何做？
多聽，多說，多讀！養成好習慣。
從統計學上說，重要單詞、短語、語法結構會多次出現；這樣不僅可以豐富詞彙量。另外，人的大腦會不自覺地對反復出現過的大量事物做比較，用歸納法抽出其共性，分析其差異，總結規律，最終獲取創造性地使用語言的能力，前提是必須首先把自己暴露在大量英文信息里。有些情況下，背單詞可能只是機械性行為，可能在思維上自己仍然是懶惰的。真正要背單詞的話，最好舉一反三，粗類旁通，用比較法來背單詞，看到一個單詞，思考其有那些同義詞、反義詞，其間的細微差別在哪裡，可能這樣做速度有點慢，但會在大腦上留下比較深的痕跡。 這種習慣堅持一年，英文就有很大進步了。
嘗試分類，給動詞，名詞，副詞，形容詞，短語...分類，從不同角度分析這些詞語的用法，試圖用英文闡釋這些單詞的意思。
分類閱讀文章，廣泛涉獵，哲學，社會科學，邏輯，藝術，文學，政治，娛樂，科技，數學，生物學，...養成習慣，最終讓學習語言這個目的轉變成獲取知識和信息。小弟推薦 - 網易公開課，有中英對照。
還可以從其他角度分類，分類交叉后，掌握住的知識就很難忘掉了，完成這些交叉的好手段是多聽新聞節目。
如能配上英文專業教材會更好，系統看完一本專業內的教材，會有很大收穫。因為這標誌著自己第一次用英文完成了一次系統思考，這樣會對書本里出現過的概念有最精確的掌握，同時，學習其他學科領域出現過的單詞、語法結構、短語時，自己有了參照物，對想就其他領域某個話題進行一般討論須付出多少努力這個問題，自己也胸有成竹了，這很重要。
想掌握好英語真的是學無止境，但任何時候學習都不算遲。加油，總有一天你會發現自己突然用英文脫口而出腦袋里的想法了，母語變的陌生了。

加non前綴就是把原本字義變成相反的，"-"不一定要加，但是分開來是不行的
例如
non-negotiable 可以寫成 nonnegotiable, 但是不能寫成 non negotiable。non-negotiable是一個字
