Since you are in the states, check out the Canadian audio company, Energy. They make great products around your budget: http://www.energy-speakers.com/na-en/
I would definitely argue against the Bose for the reasons that other had already stated. Below please find my AV system progression:
Bose (college, young and naive) -> Energy (young professional, best bang for the buck) -> B&W (professional, reaching for that last 10-20% improvement in sound) -> sell everything since my second child is due any day now..... j/k about the selling part.
Bose is the only speakers that I have regretted purchasing......
Hope this helps!

bstnyc - thanks for your suggestion. I've heard of B&W but not sure if it can be found in local electronic shops. As for Energy, I've never heard of it and seriously doubt if it's sold through mass channels such as Best Buy. We're not prepared to buy a speaker system without being able to listen to it first. In all likelihood, Bose is out, due to its proprietary hookup not compatible with my new home's pre-wiring. Now I need to look for a set with traditional hookup that both my wife and I would agree that is as good as the Bose, at a lesser price.
