At the price, nothing
Sony is on something of a roll. This 52in TV comes on the back of Group Test winning appearances at both 32in and 37-40in screen sizes – and on both of those occasions it was the ’W4000 model, as seen here.
This set is a pleasure to get up and running. It looks smart and stylish, despite being a beast of a screen at 52in, and has a handy swivel stand for fine-tuning your viewing angle, which, as this is an LCD, is merely okay.
Switch on and you’re greeted by the PlayStation 3 style menu system, which is big, bold and clear. We fire-up the auto set-up, run through our own THX Optimizer picture settings, and then sit back ready to enjoy the show.
Certainly TV pictures are pleasant enough, the 576 horizontal lines of off-air broadcast are scaled admirably to fit the 1920 x 1080 panel, and we enjoy an insightful look at Bargain Hunt before flicking to find smooth motion and a balanced colour palette over on BBC News 24 with its scrolling news bar.
Detailed images, natural colours
We send a standard definition DVD image in the form of old favourite Training Day. While not as deep and dark as the Pioneer’s black levels, this Sony LCD does dark scenes better than the rest, with good contrast levels alongside fine insight. Motion is beautifully smooth and the image is clean and clear, too.
Step-up to HD, and the level of three-dimensionality and sense of perspective the Sony delivers is sublime.
It creates utterly believable, pin-sharp, detailed images, with vivid yet natural colours. It is of course compatible with 1080p/ 24fps video, and results are brilliant. Only the slightest flicker on really tough to render details hinders enjoyment.
Sonically the silver-trimmed speakers are good but no world-beater, sounding a touch cluttered and lightweight when the action gets going, but we’ve heard plenty worse.
So, while not perfect, for a TV this size this Sony is still staggeringly adept – and look at that price. This is another Sony set that will take some beating…
