Samsung tightens grip on world LCD TV sales

If you’ve got a Samsung LCD TV at home, then the South Korean giant owes you some thanks, because the company’s now led the global LCD TV market for the ninth consecutive quarter.
According to market watch DisplaySearch, Samsung controlled 20.8 per cent of the market between January and March this year - with sales of around 4m sets. The quarter was also the first time Samsung’s share of the market had topped 20 per cent.
Samsung saw a 70 per cent jump in LCD sales during the period globally, and in the US it also accounted for 14.3 per cent of all LCD TVs sold.
Just behind Samsung, during the same period, came Sony with a 13.2 per cent share, followed by LG and Sharp with 11.6 per cent and 7.3 per cent of the market, respectively.
Things seem to be going particularly well for Samsung recently. DisplaySearch has also noted that the company took the number one sales position for LCD monitors away from Dell in the first quarter.
Samsung shipped 6.3m of the displays – an increase of 21 per cent year on year – during the period, compared to Dell’s shipments of 6.1m, a rise of just nine per cent year on year.

Samsung was the the top television manufacturer in the second quarter of this year with a 12.4% of the global market – figures that have a lot do with strong sales of LCD TVs in the last year.
According to research firm, iSuppli, flat screens will continue to gain popularity over the next year when CRT sales will account for only 38% of sales compared to 56% this year.
Samsung was trailed closely by its Korean counterpart, LG, with only a 1% market share separating the two – Philips (7.1%) was in third place followed by Sanyo (6.3%) and TCL (5.6%) respectively.
