2017 GSF

The Lexus dealer had also done a complete check on my GSF...

Except the battery, everything is normal as usual. (Again, I won't replace the OEM battery until it really dies!!!)

The Lexus also gave me a loaner car, 2023 ES300h...

I also tried its CVT and did some aggressive manual downshifts like my GSF. (I also overtook some slower car. The CVT was not slow at all. Just not as fast as my GSF, of course!!!)

I also found the steering of ES300h was not light at all!!! (This is not a bad thing)

In the past some people might think ES's steering was too light but the steering of this generation is definitely not light!!! (However, some people who prefer light steering may not like the heavier steering. Again, no car is perfect!!!)

I also found the suspension of ES300h was a little softer but definitely not too soft!!! (It still felt good if you push it a little harder...)

Again, I still think ES300h is quieter than GSF on highways...

PS: I guess... You may not think the current ES is soft!!! The reason why I think ES is softer is I compare ES with 2007 G35S, 2010 M35X or 2017 GSF... (All of those compared cars are NOT soft!!! )

Today I softened my Ohlins suspension AGAIN...

Now, the setting is 9F/14R. Of course, the stiffer settings the better handling. However, I'm not racing my GSF. It's really not necessary to be THAT stiff or become super responsive!!! (The stiffness of a car is mainly decided by SPRINGS, not dampers. Stiffer dampers definitely could help but NOT MUCH!!!)

Just believe your current car could be as stiff as 911 GT3. Then, guess what... Everything suddenly becomes VERY DIFFERENT!!!

So, what you only need to do now is "Just ignore those stupid comments and BELIEVE YOURSELF!!!" (Don't believe Japanese cars are soft. Actually, EVERY CAR is soft, including 911 GT3!!!)

---------------
You may wonder why every car is soft... That's because they are road cars, not RACE CARS!!! (Those stiff settings from Ohlins are only for RACES!!!)
---------------

PS: I also found that my new toy, Valentine v1 gen2 radar detector really helped. It really unlocked the power of my GSF!!! (I should have bought it earlier!!!)

The below is what Ohlins suggests...

Track 2-7 clicks >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Very stiff (too stiff for road cars)
Winding road 5-10 clicks >>>>>>>> Stiff (too stiff for road cars)
Street 10-20 clicks >>>>>>>>>>>> Good

I believe the above is only for the front Ohlins dampers in my GSF. I also believe 9 at front is about as stiff as 14 at rear in my GSF...

I think the OEM Sport+ mode in GSF could be as stiff as "15 click" in Ohlins and OEM Sport+ mode in 911 GT3 could be as stiff as "10 click" in Ohlins...

PS: The OEM Sport+ mode in GSF is not very stiff and still very comfortable. I used to run the stiffest suspension at the custom mode for at least 99% of the time!!!

Bilstein provides B16 Damptronic EDC suspension for M3/M4.

Bilstein B16 Damptronic for M4

This suspension can be dialed to Comfort, Sport, Sport+ modes in the car. You may think it's a brilliant idea...

In my opinion, actually it's NOT!!! (besides it's also about as expensive as Ohlins) Why???
-----------------------
This suspension is very similar to PSS10 in my son's car except Damptonic can change settings on the fly. I had tried very stiff and medium stiff settings on PSS10 for some extensive periods. I never felt PSS10 could be as stable as Ohlins on highways besides PSS10's spring rates were also lower than Ohlins's.

Even though my Ohlins now is changed to medium stiff(front) and soft(rear), on highways my softer Ohlins is still more stable(or less bouncy) than the very stiff setting in PSS10. Maybe PSS10 at the very stiff setting could provide a little quicker responsive. However, the ride frequency of Ohlins is higher than that of PSS10. So, maybe the transient response of PSS10 at very stiff setting could be better but the steady response of Ohlins should be better even at the softer settings...
----------------------

PS: I think that's why EDC is not available for many Ohlins. (I always wonder why Ohlins or KW doesn't privode EDC for the most of their products) That's because it's really NOT necessary!!! (Of course, EDC is always better but it's really not needed for Ohlins due to lack of competition!!!)

In this video, there are three different setups as below...

1. H&R springs + OEM dampers >>>> The most bouncy
2. PSS10 on 3 (10 is the stiffest) >>>> It's very like a stock ride but still stiffer than the OEM ride
3. PSS10 on 9 (10 is the stiffest) >>>> The most uncomfortable (bad on roads but good on tracks)

So, those softer settings are more suitable for public roads. (In the beginning I always tended to put my Ohlins at those stiffer settings because of more bouncy Ohlins ride. It's actually NOT GOOD!!!)

I think I should have just accepted more bouncy ride from Ohlins due to much higher ride frequency...
(Of course, the stock ride is still the most refined ride no matter what... That's why those very high ride frequency factory cars are SO EXPENSIVE!!!)

So, for these aftermarket dampers... At some situations less is more!!!

With the radar detector... Now, I can overtake any slower cars without much trouble!!! (But, still need to be careful, of course!!!)

PS: As the whole processes of overtakes were so short, I didn't even bother putting the 8AT at the manual shift position... (only used those paddle shifters behind the steering wheel)

Believe it or not... So far(5.5 years), on highways I NEVER did full throttle on my GSF except one time when I tried to race a tuned Accord 2.0t!!!

Actually I was a bit surprised how fast that tuned Accord 2.0t was... (I admit I underrated that Accord!!!)

A fully tuned Accord 2.0t could produce almost 300hp on wheels. My GSF should produce about 400hp on wheels. However, Accord weights only about 3380lbs and GSF weights about 4050 lbs. Therefore, GSF should still be faster but not by a landslide any more!!! (Civic Type R should be even faster!!!)

Nevertheless, I think my GSF should last much longer than Accord 2.0t or Civic Type R even though they're NOT tuned. (Of course, tuned ones will be even worse!!!)

(Based on my driving style)
GSF: 15 years or more <<< So, I could constantly redline or full throttle my GSF every day!!!
Stock Accord 2.0t: 10 years or more
Tuned Accord 2.0t: 5 years or more

PS: People may need to think about why those non-premium cars weight so LIGHT, no matter Japanese or European cars...

This tuned Civic Type R did 100-200 in 10.xx...
