動力部分，引擎選用涵蓋第一款二氧化碳排放量壓低至94g/km的環保柴油引擎，以及可輸出254匹最大馬力與0到時速100公里可在6.7秒完成的渦輪增壓T5汽油引擎。

而不管配置手排或自排變速箱，所有引擎版本都配有start-stop怠速熄火系統與braking energy regeneration煞車動能回收系統功能。

新Volvo V40更搭載了更進步的 City Safety都會安全防護系統，目前運行速度已可到時速50公里

汽油引擎
A 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder “T3″ producing 148 horsepower and 177 lb-ft (240Nm) of torque. Offered with only a 6-speed manual gearbox, it allows the V40 to run from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.8 seconds and to a top speed of 131 mph (210 km/h), while delivering an impressive combined fuel-consumption of 5.8lt/100 km (40.6 mpg US) on the EU cycle.

A 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder “T4″ producing 178-HP and 177 lb-ft (240Nm) of torque. Mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic, it enables the small hatchback to reach 62 mph in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of (140 mph) 225 km/h. Average fuel-economy comes in at 5.9lt/100km (39.9 mpg US).

A range-topping 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five “T5″ making 251-HP and 266 lb-ft (360Nm) of torque, powering the V40 to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds, a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), while delivering a combined fuel-economy of 7.9lt/100 km (29.8mpg US).

柴油引擎
A 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder “D2″, mated to an exclusive six-speed manual, that produces 113-HP and 199 lb-ft (270Nm) of torque, allowing for a 0 to 62 mph run of 12.3 seconds, a top speed of 118 mph 190 km/h and average fuel-consumption of 3.6lt/100 km (65.3 mpg US) on the EU cycle

A 2.0-liter turbocharged five-cylinder “D3″ that can be had with either a six speed automatic or manual gearbox. The engine delivers 148-HP and 258 lb-ft (350Nm) of torque, enabling the V40 to run to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and to a top speed of 134 mph (215 km/h). Combined fuel consumption comes in at 4.4lt/100 km (53.5 mpg US)

A range-topping 2.0-liter turbocharged five-cylinder “D4″ that produces 175-HP and 295 lb-ft (400Nm) of torque. Equipped with either a six speed automatic or manual transmission, 0 to 62 mph comes in at 6.6 seconds, while top speed is reached at 215 km/h (134 mph). Average fuel-consumption is still an impressive 4.4lt/100 km (53.5 mpg US).
