Maybe I can share some of my observation to you.
I have not tested the new Volvo V60 D4. Mine was the last V60 with 6 speed and 5 cylinder 2.0 Turbo Diesel.

1. If you look at the new engine, it changes from 5 to 4, cyclinder wise, good because you don't need so much engine oil! But look carefully, the maximum torque has been moved from 1500rpm/40N to 1750rpm/40N!

2. When I drive my 6 speed 5 cylinder version, I noticed that when I do not accelerate or little accelerate, the RPM between 900 to 1400 is where most of the rattling noise on Diesel engine is most apparent - this also depend on if the engine has warmed up or, now read this carefully, what mode you are driving - I will come to this shortly..
Once you hit the 1500RPM, you can hear the beautiful sound of that 5 cyclinder beefing up, it is very nice and very solid engine power sound. Now with the new engine, you are left with another additional 250rpm where this 'lack" of turbo kick not kick in. Well the 8 speed with helps but it may be reason why you are hearing this more..

3. The V60 has three mode - elegant, eco and performance. Yes, Volvo did not say there is a difference but after driving for 3 months around 9000km later, I can tell you there is. The difference is how the gears are being shifted at these different mode. I recall at one time I was in eco and suddenly I need to pick up the speed - I step on the pedal and there was at least half to one second before the engine switch to maximum torque! This would not happen if you are in performance mode but then at that mode, you can feel the car constantly begging you to step harder!!

For those who do not believe, I challenge you to try this out and see. If you still do not believe, that is fine, just don't bombard me.

Hope this help.

我倒是沒注意過這三種模式下檔位變化的差異,改天來試試看好了。
Sorry to write in English - apparently the orginal initiator of this thread did not appreciate English - so be it!

Yes, you can try and let me know if you have the same feeling!
If you try between Performance and Eco, it would be more obvious. At city driving speed, the Eco tends to be more smooth with acceleration and therefore the gear change pace. Performance always make you feel it is ready to rev - good if you like quick pick-up but... sometime not for me.
At high speed driving, no much difference in my opinion, except in Performance mode the downshifting is faster than ECO mode.
Elegant mode is somewhere in between - I did not drive long enough on either mode to comment if any fuel saving difference.

Hope this help!
Many people think I am having a wet dream but I stand behind what I experienced myself.

I don`t know if you have ever tried your V60 D4 on the twisty mountain road.
It is very difficult to drive and I can`t feel very comfortable to drive my V60 D3.
Even I use manual to drive, it doesn`t get better.
I conclude two keys: the car`s weight and turbo lag.
Older V60 design to use 1 turbo machine to drive engine.
The heavy car`s weight will drop the car speed. Then you must step on pedal deeper.
I will feel the turbo lag becomes seriously.
Then I can`t keep car speed very smoothly.
Now new V60 use 2 turbo machine on this new diesel engine.
I think it will fix this issue. And it must let driver drive comfortably on the twisty mountain road.
