Giant Defy 3 or TCR2

What should I buy? My riding goals are (1) may used for TRI event -- not much climbing, 1 time in a year (2) only ride on weekend with other riders, distance is from 40 ~ 60 miles, (3) how to take it back to USA? need special box or others..

My average speed is around 18~20 miles per hour with group riding in city road. Your opinion is welcome.

My choice is Defy 3.
To Q3.
Yes,It‘s need special box.
Paul

I also vote for Defy, if you are not particularly interested in racing speed.

You can check the compliments of Defy adv 12~14. It is a bike with comfortable

geometry, although the aluminium can't absorb vibration as much as carbon. The

30t front crankset and the rear Cassette gives you a very easy way to climb up

steep or long hill. I even think that defy is more suitable for an ordinary

rider and tcr is for the athletic rider. Defy adv has very awesome credits

abroad and it really gives me comfort and fast enough speed. Most importantly, I

can ride it all day long without any pain in my back or neck.

Hello Paul,

Both bikes you quoted are good but they do have differences. Defy is designed for comfort riding at long distances, while TCR is more of an aggresive riding posture. Since you mentioned that TRI event is only annually, I will think Defy is more suitable for your frequent long distance rides.
Packing-wise, the original box which the bike came in is good enough for air travel. You can request for the bike shop to setup the bike but pack it back into the box. I did that and had the bike box onto a plane without any issue.
Hope these help.

Thanks for sharing. And, I do enjoy riding with my teammates in USA. Normally, we ride Saturday and Sunday with distance from 40 ~ 60 miles. In addition, I also run and swim at weekday night. Anyway, I do understand your point regarding the passion of riding bike.

Thanks for this great information. Should I also need to contact airline for further information? I will take Cathay pacific airline to Japan, then, American Airline to Dallas.

Thanks for sharing. Below is my plan

1. Get the bike, and also do the fitting. Then, ride for 2 weeks with minor adjustment if needed.

2. Disassemble it, and put it back to original box. Then, take it back.

3. I will ask airline company for detail if I will travel with my bike box.

4. your opinion for Defy 3 or TCR? I think I will take Defy 3...

You will probably need to check with the various airlines on their package/luggage size regulations. The airline I flew with (Jetstar) just treated the bike box as check-in luggage, though it did came out in the oversized articles/sports equipment belt when I was collecting it. I know some airlines charge extra for weird/large size luggages so do check it out.

Your plan sounds good, have fun!
