when you compare the price, you need to compare apple to apple. u can't compare the price with all option in the US with base model in Taiwan.
for example, in Taiwan, even E280 doesn't have leather seat. u will need to compare cars with no leather seat in the US. A lot of options are standard in the US which is an option in Taiwan, or Europe.
take new BMW E90 as an example, the 328i (3.0L engine) cost around $32K MSRP with automatic. many dealer are willing to give some discount that the actual buy price would be $31K including tax(with no option, just add automatic). use it for 1 year. the FOB is 80% of original price, around $25K.
with all the tax, shipping and insurance. u will pay about 60% of FOB, equals 15K.
so total price for the car to be legally on Taiwan's street is 32K plus 15K = 47K.
i don't think u can buy a 325i or 330i in Taiwan for 47K USD.
ps. besides, 3 series in Taiwan are make in South Afrcia. on the other hand, 3 series in the US are made in Germany! go figure.
