We were surprised that the list consisted entirely of small passenger cars, such as Ford Motor's Focus, and the Saturn Ion. We expected to see at least one SUV on the roster. But a section on the Highway Loss Data Institute's (HLDI) Web site explains why the list looks the way it does: small two- and four-door cars typically have higher death rates and higher-than-average insurance injury claims.
Automakers whose cars made the list took issue with it. The main complaints involved the IIHS' testing procedures, the meaning of a worse-than-average rate of injury-claim filings and the fairness of singling out cars with one or more bad scores despite multiple good scores in other areas.
所以...
...Ford Motor's (nyse: F - news - people ) Focus four-door and Mazda's Mazda3 four-door, for which there are no IIHS crash-test ratings with side airbags;...
In terms of other comments we received, a Mazda spokesman wrote that the Mazda3 has a "good" IIHS frontal-impact rating, despite the "poor" side rating of models tested without side airbags. And, he said, "many Mazda3 models also feature dynamic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes, a combination of safety features not available on many other vehicles in its class."
We noted all vehicles with a "poor" score in frontal and/or rear crash testing. No current-model car has a "poor" frontal score, but the IIHS has issued 41 "poor" side ratings, of which 12 went to small cars. Of those 12 small cars, seven were tested without optional side bags, including General Motors' 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt four-door, Mazda's 2007 Mazda3 four-door and Toyota's 2007 Corolla four-door.
20. Mazda3
Four-Door/Five-Door Hatchback
SCORE: 113
Consumer Reports' accident avoidance: Much better than average
The Mazda3 has been the darling of automotive critics. The styling is unique and still stands out several years after introduction, the powertrain is peppy, and it's one of the best-handling small cars. Now for the bad part: Both the sedan and hatchback versions of the 3 fared very poorly in side-impact crash tests, garnering a lowly three-star rating from NHTSA and the lowest "Poor" rating from the IIHS. Side airbags aren't standard, either.
