Rome (CNN) -- Formula 1 race car driver Robert Kubica was "gravely" injured in a crash in Italy on Sunday, but his injuries are not life-threatening, the Italian fire brigade said.
He lost control of his car at the beginning of the Ronde de Andorra rally near the town of Testico, causing the vehicle to leave the track and hit the wall of a building, fire officials said.
The cause of the accident is not known at this point, they said.
He was taken to the Hospital Santa Corona di Pietra Ligure, which declined to comment on his condition.
Italian media reported that he suffered multiple fractures. The Polish driver is currently ranked 8th in the world.
Kubica, who drives for Renault, set a record for the fastest lap at preseason testing in Spain on Saturday, completing a circuit in one minute, 13.144 seconds.
The first race of the Formula 1 season begins in Bahrain on March 13.
