on MB bluetec, there is a instant heat which will heat up diesel in 1-2 second. by the time you unlock the door, sit down, fasten seatbelt, the car is ready to go.
I think Diesel hybrid is the future trend. it will combine both technology. i believe most major manufactures are working on it already.
the only reason diesel is not pupular (yet) is California, NY, MA, VM's emittion regulation. there were simply NO diesel engine can pass. AND those states account for almost half of the European import cars! (CA alone is about 30% already)
Poeple will travel, when people knows that their car can't go to NY, CA, MA, no one want to buy that car. as a result, MB, BMW, VW decided to wait until they come up with 50 states legal diesel.
i think in 10 years, at least 30% of the new car sell in the US will be diesel powered.

寒帶國家使用柴油汽車通常會配備有「加熱器」或「加熱棒」來加速柴油的流動
預熱塞根本不是用來加速柴油流動 ...

I don't know what diesel you are talking about, as far as i know, the modern diesel, there is no need to preheat during cold start.
Probably old distributor type diesel engine
Modern diesel engine doesn't need much time to preheat , due to combustion-chamber、glow-plug material、heating circuit changes
