UCSC?

Hi,

I assume you can read english as you are planning to study at UCSC. I just feel I have to respond after reading so many absolutely idiotic comments by Non-motorcycle riders. If you ask any car driver in Taiwan, is it safe to ride/commute on a scooter in Taiwan, they will almost always tell you: NO WAY, it is too dangerous, look at all those TV news of scooter crashes and people losing their lives!

I lived in the San Francisco bay area for 7 years, and I commuted on a motorcycle, almost 40 miles each way from South San Francisco (where I live) to San Jose Univerity, for 2.5 of those 7 years. I commuted for very different reasons which I will list below, for your reference:
1. I commuted on a Honda 250cc cylinder and later Suzuki DR350 cc single cylinder, for fuel economy and free, ease of parking at school campus.
2. I split lanes only when there is extremely slow moving traffic, the main advantage of using a motorcycle is that you can also use HoV lane during traffic.

It is not recommended you commute on a liter bike unless you are going a very short distance, because of the depreciation of the expensive 600-1000+cc repli-racers. It's just not worth it financially, to commute on them and racking up meaningless mileage.

I always kept two bikes, one for commuting (single cylinder small displacement), and the other for the weekend fun ride (GXSR 750, Yamaha R1, Kaw ZX10R). I switch bikes every year to try something new, and to avoid losing too much money during re-sell if the mileage is too high.

I have ridden extensively around the South Bay coastal region near UCSC (hwy1, 9, 17, 35 skyline drive) and the roads near UCSC are absolutely sportbike heaven! They are the main roads that bay area sportbike riders congregate and ride during summer weekends. You'll meet most of them at the intersection of hwy35 and Alpine/Pescadero road. (which comes out at Pescadero beach on hyw1)

I bought used bikes and sold them almost every year. This way you don't accumulate too much mileage and you won't lose much money after riding for 1 year (3000-4000 miles), remember you only ride on weekends. The used 250 single cylinder for commuting is only about USD$1.5-2k. Again, the price doesn't drop too much below $1.5k.

It does rain and also it is VERY FOGGY in the coastal area near UCSC that makes the road WET, so you definitely want to shop for bikes with ABS.

Be sure to invest in high quality riding leathers, gloves, and fitting helmet. This is a must!

Also a MUST - Be sure to attend safety riding schools, and later, performance riding schools at the race tracks at Sears Point or Laguna Seca! It will make you a safer street rider!

You WILL receive speeding tickets, and they will be $$$$$. Your bike insurance will be $$$$$. So keep those two expenses in mind.

You don't need a car if your roomate or close friends have one. I know many UCSC students who don't own cars.

Mountain biking and road cycling are also very popular and incredible around UCSC, so is surfing and hiking in the mountains. Basically, you are in outdoor heaven near UCSC!

Enjoy the best time of your life there! It remains one of my absolute favorite riding areas of all the places I have ridden around the US and other parts of the world.

Cheers and keep the rubber side down!

Santa Cruze

My suggestion. Chances and statistics shows"unsafe" riding motorcycle compare with driving, but life is life and all of use choice what we want to do. I would not suggest doing it for commute and having motorcycle as your only vehicle. Be a good kids, get a car first.

Follow the process to get a motorcycle license asap here. You don't have to have motorcycle to start. Get an helmet and register a class. You use their motorcycle and get passed the exam.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/ has a lot of low mileage motorcycles in a very good price. After like 6 months, you can re-think do you want get one or not.

PM me if you want more info. Looks forward to ride with you.

I drive most of time. I only ride during weekend and for leisure and fun (feel young). Occasionally I ride to work.
