I live in Sunnyvale(south bay), I have been riding for a year now, and I own a 2005 SV650s. It is my first bike, and I am very satisfied with it, and i still ride it today. It is cheap ($5000 when I got it 1 year ago), and cheap to maintain (I low-sided it few months ago, broke my shift lever, only $30 to replace, and $70 for slider, good as new again). And it is a popular bike, easy to sell in the future.
Here is another site that has buy/sell forum: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/
As for the M1 license, if you take MSF(Motorcycle Safety Foundation) class, it will include road test during the class, using their bike, so you don't need to own a bike to take the class and road test, i took it, very useful and easy.
Did you get your M1 license already? You should get your license before you start looking for bikes.
Just so you know most of the sellers won't even let you test ride their bikes without a valid M1 license, helmet and full amount of money at their hand.
Also, don't forget to count the sales tax, registration fee and insurance. That will make your budget even tighter.
Good luck.
I bought three used bikes from craigslist, they are all in very good condition and runs perfect. Just be careful and pay attention when you check the bike.
1. carefully check the bottom of the engine to see any leak.
2. check from a distance to make sure the two wheels are in a line.
3. Check around the bike to see any "drop" sign or not.
4. Check engine screws to see how it looks. The screws will have some mark if it been un-screw. ( engine has been opened)
5. If it is private seller, ask the seller don't start the bike at the day. It is good you can start the engine at cold temp to see how it runs.
I do these checks before asking for a test ride. After you start engine, start to carefully listen to the engine sound to ensure it runs smooth. No abnormal noise....
I live in Fremont, not far from Berkeley. Hope we can have chance to ride together. http://www.bayarearidersforum.com is a good place to find riding events after you got your bike.
SV650 is a good bike, I own a 2004 DL650. They use the same engine and I know the V-twin is really smooth. I actually feel more smooth and feel compare with my previous 2002 919. ( Hornet) Sold the DL650 last December, got a 2004 BMW R1150R Rockster. I am glad to see some of Mobile 01 friends also enjoy riding and live in SF Bayarea.
Please keep us update how is your purchase goes.
