Toyota's recall may spread to Europe: report

TOKYO (AFP) – Japan's Toyota Motor may recall its vehicles in Europe due to an accelerator problem that triggered massive recalls in the United States, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

The world's largest automaker is considering recalling Corolla, RAV4 and other models produced and sold in Europe, the Mainichi Shimbun reported, adding that it was not clear how many vehicles were involved.

The models are equipped with similar accelerator pedal parts to those of 2.3 million vehicles recalled in the United States, the latest in a series of recalls by Toyota, the daily said.

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) expects to recall roughly 2.0 million vehicles in Europe to fix defective gas pedals, a person familiar with the matter said Monday.

Because the company is still working on finalizing the exact number of vehicles to be recalled, it's unclear when the recall will be formally announced, the person said.

The move comes after Toyota said last Thursday it will recall 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. for the same gas pedal-related problem.

The combined volume of 4.3 million vehicles in the two regions to be recalled due to the faulty pedal is equal to 55% of the 7.81 million cars and trucks that the Toyota group including Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. (7205.TO) sold globally in 2009.

The final recall volume in Europe could vary, depending on the country's rules for repairing faulty parts, the person added.

WASHINGTON — Toyota Motor said Tuesday it was suspending U.S. sales of eight recalled vehicle models to fix accelerator pedals that stick, the latest quality problem to confront the world's No. 1 automaker.
As part of the plan, Toyota said it was halting production at five manufacturing facilities for the week of Feb. 1 "to assess and coordinate activities." There are 2.3 million vehicles involved in the recall, which was announced last week.

"This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized," said Bob Carter, Toyota's group vice president and general manager.

TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota says it is recalling 75,500 vehicles in China for the same gas pedal problem behind the U.S. and European recalls.

Toyota Motor Corp. has Thursday informed Chinese authorities it will start a recall in February for RAV4 sport utility vehicles that were manufactured in China (中國製造的RAV4) between March 2009 and January 2010, says spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi.

They use the same problem parts in accelerators that caused the recent spate of massive recalls in the U.S.

Toyota said earlier Thursday it will also recall vehicles in Europe, although it has not said the number of vehicles involved.
