In the case of the Highlander, some of its buyers would've settled with the RAV4 if the Highlander were not offered in its respective market, while others would've looked elsewhere to offerings from other car makers. The point of the Highlander is to capture the latter, but at the same time it captures the former group from the RAV4 as a side effect. The same reasoning goes for Toyota's truck-based SUVs.
1 Honda CR-V 635,256
4 Toyota RAV4 428,514
12 Toyota Highlander/Kluger 230,547
34 Honda Pilot 124,295
If the logic keeps the same, we also can count Honda Pilot in for honda SUV sales.
Acutally HiLander has bigger engine displacements (3.5L, 2.7L) and exterior/interior size than RAV-4.. and MSRP is by far more expensive than RAV-4 by 25% (6000 USD).. Both are different market segmentation.
IMHO, to use Highlander as an example that compares to Honda Pilot is much meaningful.
