Still, it was impressive, considering a stock CSL (360 hp) runs the ring at 7:50, faster than F430....and faster than the new M3 too.
p.s. BMW engineers calculated that their BMW/Sauber F1 car can run the ring at 5:15.8. The official record is Porsche 956 at 6:11.13

tks, but I got confused, I thought that CSL was production car but with high-end tuning (like RUF's or sumthing). would that be consider as a stock car? (someone tells me that it's a DTM car)
Or... that CSL was one of the kind? purpose built for time attack.

CSL is not a DTM car. In 2001, BMW produced a limited quantity (10) of M3 GTR with V8 engines in it so BMW can use V8 in ALMS races. M3 GTR cost 250,000 Euros but even then, it is not a real DTM racer because BMW never made M3 (E46) DTM replica for the road.
CSL is a modified M3 (E46) by BMW, and it is a stock car, which ran a very impressive 7:50 compare to M3 (E46) at 8:22. BMW produced about 1400 of them.
The CSL that ran 7:22 was supercharged to 600+ HP and with race tires, and in fact, that particular M3 CSL is up for sale in Europe I believe. But since it was modified, it no longer count as a stock CSL. Plus it ran with race tires, that in it self, wouldn't be counted as stock car record.
Therefore, Zonda still has the stock car record.
If you don't count race cars and those strange looking track cars like Radical SR8, etc., the modified CSL currently has the second fastest road car time (including both stock and modified)). The fastest road car record is Porsche 996 GT2 at 7:15 set in 2004, modified of course, also 600+HP but I am not sure if it ran with race tire or not.
