You can change the light by moving your viewpoint around.
The quality of light is defined not as the amount (or strength) of light,but the size of the light source.
The key in handling light is to expose for the main subject.In portraits it's the face. Forget everything but the face.

Don't look into the sun or the lamps. Look at the things that reflect that light.
Soft diffused light with some sparkles works well for portraits.
