Slow ... but works.
By Latte Lover on June 13, 2014
I bought this scanner to convert thousands of 9-year old negatives to digital so they could be shared online. I chose this scanner because 1)had an autoscan mode that would scan the full negative strip (even though in my cases they were already cut down to 4 negs per strip), and 2) did NOT make you use a feed tray; negatives are inserted without a carrier or feed tray directly into the unit. Many years ago I had an hp photosmart scanner and it was the best one ever; of course, it has been discontinued for many years, but I never understood why HP didn't keep this unit alive ([...])
If you have older children that need punish work or chores, this is a good place to start (joking). This scanner is SLOW. I average 6 minutes per 4 negative strip. I must say that considering the age of the negatives and their overall condition, this scanner is doing a very good job. Most of the pictures were shot with flash, and it appears that over the years, the "whiteness" has increased (as the color fades overtime).
I have 4-5000 negs that I need scanned and I can't imagine when they will be finished. With an average of 1.5 minute per scan, I'm getting about 40 scans to the hour -- a feat the HP could do in a few minutes. Yes, I do have the quality set slightly higher so that people can enlarge the image slightly to see facial details. Even with the higher quality, I'm only seeing 2/3 of a megabyte file sizes. Using a quick reduction software (I'm old, I use VUEPRINT by Hamrick), size drops to 1/4 of a megabyte and I notice no significant loss.
When I had my HP, I used Vuescan by Hamrick instead of the standard HP scan drivers. The manufacturer of this unit however, isn't listed as supported.Read more ›

... received the prime-film xa and I am surprised and disappointed that there seems to be no overscan capability

Recently received the prime-film xa and I am surprised and disappointed that there seems to be no overscan capability. I am scanning 35mm film. The machine crops the image slightly on the top or bottom of the frame. I don't see how this can be considered a professional offering when it crops negatives without an ability to correct for this. You can only adjust left and right but not top and bottom.

I give this scanner a 4. 5 rating. ...

I give this scanner a 4.5 rating. As others have noted, it is slow. However, it does just what I want it to do: produce high quality scans that can be enlarged if desired to about 32" by 24". I have about 30,000 slides so I am not looking to scan the whole batch, just carefully selected slides for research or illustration purposes (eg. museum exhibits), so one scan at a time is ok. I tried out different settings for several hours and compared the results. For my purposes I found that the following gives me the results I want. Insert the slide, emulsion side up, and select "preference" and "positive" under "scan". Then set the DPI to 5000, turn the color depth to 16 bit and turn the "magic touch" on. You can save this setting at the end of each session. Do a "pre-scan", about 80 seconds. An image will appear on the Cyber View X software screen. Do not bother trying to manipulate this image. Wait until the end and do all adjustments in Photoshop. Now select "scan" the image. The total scan will take about 5 minutes and will store the image in "documents" for retrieval for Photoshop. After manipulation in Photoshop you can store the image in "pictures" as a JPEG file. The size will be between 5.5 and 8.5 MB. A word of caution: scans at more than 5000 DPI increase the scanning time a lot! Also, I want to mention thatsetup of the scanner is relatively simple and straight forward, with clear instructions in the manual.

Other reviewers have complained about batch capabilities with film strips. This is a matter of the software, not the scanner. When using the included SilverFast 8, there are indeed problems. Problems of frame alignment, problems of scanning 6 frames on a strip that only has 4 frames, problems of exposure and density. On the other hand, when using CyberView X5, also included, these problems do not exist. CyberView, which works on both PC and Mac, has accurate frame alignment, accurate detection of number of frames on each film strip, excellent exposure and color balance. I have over 10,000 negative images to scan and anticipate no problem at all in getting these done. Excellent scanner when used with the CyberView X5!
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Vuescan.
