Oil
I have had my D600 since the 5th of October and have around 4000 shutter clicks already. Most of them were shooting volleyball and 5FPS and and at F2.8 I didn't really notice much dust until last week when shooting outdoors beyond F10 and did some F22 test shots. It was pretty bad and I thought I had oil by the looks of it. I ordered some sensor swabs but they haven't arrived yet. Since I was thinking oil, why not have Nikon clean it?
Well I took my D600 to Nikon Service in Ginza, Tokyo. The Ginza service center is only about 30 minutes from my house by train. Had my warranty card with me so was told all cleanings are free for the first year and only 1000yen($12) after that. Pretty good deal. I asked the tech to look at the sensor and he said it was all dust and not oil. Filled out my form and was told to come pick it up in an hour. I also asked about the oil/dust issue and he tried to explain the spots are more obvious because of the higher resolution. I don't know if this is the standard Nikon tech answer or just his opinion.
I will shoot some blue skies tomorrow and see how good they cleaned it.
Can't complain too much with a free cleaning and a 1 hour turnaround.
