I've long used 105/1.8, and very shortly used 105/2.5 both Ai-S version
Today, 1 step (aperture 1.8 vs 2.5) is not an issue for modern digital cameras.
Agree with Figo, Tone is the matter.
For my opinion 1.8 is softer not only at wild open but also few steps down.
Here I used the term [soft], not referring to something like MTF, but more about tone texture...
To me, I love it, but I think it's a backward for most people that feeling it NOT SHARP...
Another big different is the weight (especially in size to hold), 105/2.5 is the winner.
