I was trading with one of my old relationships less than a month ago. He is working for Canon and makes weird business with all sort of stuff you can get in areas where Canon doesn't sell that piece or model.
Now, he told me, despite not knowing about the real names :
1DsMk III : 22 Mp probably,
1D Mk III : 17 or 13Mp but 1.2 crop.
5D replaced by :
- better : 17Mp and (digic 3).
- lower and cheaper than 5D launch : 13Mp (same as 5D), but with anti-dust (every model gets anti-dust). So the "don't buy 5D now" seems real.
- 40D : 10 or 12MP.
In fact Canon thought to make the 12MP 40D first to the 400D but they had to urge the 400D because of competition or for testing purpose for their process...
Canon has made its Cmos process much better and FF is getting acceptable approvals. So they will choose to go for higher number of sensors or much better approvals and a ot of other prospects. All the camera price at Canon depended completely on the approvals and they were quite unacceptable for the FF. FF has more than power 2 rejects of the APS-C for the same details. This is mathematics.
I have read that at the 350D launch approval were at 70% percent for the 350D/20D APS-C and at about 7% on the 1DS Mk II. So 93% of the FF twice bigger Eos 1Ds Mk II were thrown away.That makes this twice bigger and so twice more expensive to produce full frame chip in fact 20 times more expensive than the APS-C. If Canon could raise that amount to 30 or 50% of full frame approuved, this would be the end of the need of the APS-C frame.
The guy says that Canon will go for FF only, in a near future. He says not to buy anything EF-S from Canon today. He also says that all EF-S lenses are junk and overpriced. He also told that this explains why Sigma and compatible makersare so good at EF-S lenses and so bad at full frame compared to Canon itself.

It seems that in the US, regional Canon reps are getting info on new products next Monday/Tuesday (12th/13th)
In the UK I'm told that: "The David Leung advert in this week's AP [magazine] confirms that Canon are announcing new products at a dealer launch on 23 February, and suggests that Focus will see full details made public."
