I share my personal expereince with you simply because I have experience just like you. I had these problems of choosing lens to take pictures of my family. I guess I am lucky enough to buy lenses without checking out prices first.
EF 28mmF1.8 USM is a great lens and I am sure you are enjoying it right now. My local camara shop in Taichung does not have this lens in stock and I will have to wait until after Chinese new year.
Too bad you do not live in Taichung or we can bring our kids out and have some fun together. My wife has joined this Minority Group for Monozygotic and Dizygotic Twins. They held meetings constantly to support new moms and share experiences of rising children. I suppose you have same kind of group in your city. Please encourage your wife to join and you will find a lot of help on rising child from there.
Just when you are enjoying your EF 28mmF1.8 USM for your new born child, may I also suggest you another great lens for your wife? Go check out EF 85mmF1.8 USM on Flickr and will be amazed of how great this lens is. Use 28mm foryour child and use 85mm for your wife. Trues me, this will make your wife happier. By the way, EF 85mmF1.8 is comparatively inexpensive once you have experienced the amazing bokeh 85mmF1.8 produces.
