Well, I guess I can answer that for you. I have 15-85mm and I don't use it for portrait shots also. Why you might ask. Well, it is too clear and sharp.
Usually portrait lens has the following virtue:
1. big aperture size such as F2.8 or biger.
2. 75-135mm in FF is often praised and cherrished as best portrait focal length.
3. amazing bokeh which isolates people from background.
If you look at 15-85mm lens then you will see it only satisfies point 3 and part of point2.
I am a portrait loving guy and I tried a lot portrait shots with my 15-85mm lens. I have to say although short focus distance helps but small aperture on 15-85mm is not that good for portrait shots. IF and that is a big IF, if you have Tamron 28-75mmf2.8 or Sigma 50mmF1.4 then you are better off with these 2 lenses to do portrait works.
I find it not easy to isolate my model from the background with 15-85mm lens from within 10 feet of distance but that is too invasive to my model's personal space. I prefer to do portaits at distance of 15 feet plus to 25 feet. Also, when set to 75-85mm range on my 15-85mm, the aperture size is at F5.6 which is kindda small for portrait works.
If you ask, I would say the best focal length for APSC body to do portrait shots is between 50-100mm which on my EOS body would be 80mm-160mm cropped. That is my personal favorite focal length with portrait shots.
For your information, use 15-85mm to take close up shots on model's eyes produces an amazing image effect.
Cheers and have a nice day.
