1 CANON 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM (小小黑??) 21000元
2 SIGMA APO 70-300MM F4-5.6 DG MACRO 6000~7000元
3 SIGMA 70-300mm DG OS 14000~15000元

Canon 70-300mm is too soft between 200-300mm but focus speed is quite ok.

Sigma 70-300mm has one EX version which is good but does not have OS. Sigma 70-300mm with os version is nice but again soft between 200-300mm. I would not recommend any of the 70-300mm lenses from SIGMA.

However, you do have four great options for taking tele shots from Canon,Sigma, and Tamron.

Please do consider the following lenses:

1. Canon EF 70-200mm L IS USM II F2.8
Pros: Excellent overal performance tele lens
Cons: somewhat too expensive to justify. 200mm is the longest and sometimes no long enough.

2. Sigma 70-200mm EX F2.8 OS HSM
Pros: First alternative in this class to offer OS. F2.8 give you better shutter speed to capture your image. Price at NT$48,00 at F2.8 is okay although a bit pricy.
Cons: Just a tab soft than 70-200F2.8IS at 200mm. 200m is just not long enough to take big sport event shots.

3. Tamron 70-300mm VC USD F4-5.6
Pros: Sharp all the way to 300mm. USD makes fast focus speed a charm. VC is excellent and is comparable to IS. Price at NT$15,890 is great deal for the money. Weight is good sice it is light and can be used by hand held shooting.
Cons: Apperture starts from F4-5.6 is small and not big enough for close up portrait shots. Minimum focus distance at 1.5m is kind of too long, don't you think?

4. Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS F4-5.6
Pros: Very light weight to be used as hand held shooting. Cheap to the bone price at NT$6,500 makes it a great lens to throw around. IS works great for tele shots. Extra 50mm at the longer end makes it a desirable lens. In my opinion this one is the most workable tele lens where you will have to take shots of constant moving objects.
Cons: Small apperture starts from F4 makes it hard to capture fast moving objects. Focus speed is slowest and sometimes it hunts for focus at the longer end. Although not really soft but it is certainly not very sharp.

If you live in Taichung, you can come and play my EF-S 55-250mm and see it for yourself. Also, you can use my Tamron A005 70-300mm VC and see the sharpness for yourself, too.

By the way, my co-worker just want to add Canon EF 70-200mm F4 L for your consideration. It is a good lens too at resonable price with fixed aperture size of 4. Believe or not, this 70-200mm F4L is another great portrait lens in my personal opinion.

Enjoy your camara and enjoy your life with your family. Cheers.

TO NOVICEPLAYER
too soft means "weak"?? or not good at 200~300mm
thank you for your advises and it's really take for a while to read your analysis
i appreciated your kindness that you lent to me your lens HAHA!!
thank you angin to spend a longtime to explain for me
BEST REGARDS~~

Well, Based upon your needs and requirements, I will recommand SP AF 70-300mm VC USD to you based on following point of views.

Lets start with your purpose of this range and your subject in pictures and your requirements of desired lens and how-and-when you will utilize this lens.

1. Purpose: You try to find a cost effective lens to balance picture sharpness and quality and most important of all -> price.

2. Subject you are shooting at:
a. a flying jet, most of the time would be fighter jets which are smaller than commercial jets such as 747 or B300.
b. Subject have to be clear and sharp - no one wants to see shallow D.O.F. fighter jets. That means you will have to set your aperture size to F5.6 or even F6.3 to make sure the whole jet is clear and crispy.

3. Requirements:
a. as sharp as possible at longer end (in this case would be 300mm)
b. focus speed is a must since you are pursuing a fast moving object.
c. IS or VC is a must since shooting jets is mostly hand-held. I tried to take pics of flying jets and tripod is useless... >_<"
d. While luxury of L lenses is a charm but there is no point of killing your wallet. Lense price has to be "FRIENDLY"

4. How and when you use the lens:
a. Shooting jets are mostly taking place in the DAY TIME, that makes aperture size of F4 good enough.
b. jets are moving fast in 3D space and a tripod is although desired but really useless. That means you will hand held your camara and lens on your hand most of the time. Now you see, weight does play a good important role here.
c. one shot mode simply is not good enough for taking pics of fast moving jets and I strongly recommand you to use AI servo mode.

OKay, now is the moment of truth.

Let's start with kicking lenses out of our list.

1. Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS USM II ---> out
- Nobody can resist the temptation of Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS USM II. But also not everyone is financially ready or mentally prepared to pay NT$80,000 plus for the lens. I am not making assumption that you can nafford this lens but rather trying to help you to spend your money wisely for the purpose of shooting jets in day light situations.

2. Canon EF 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM ---> out
- Although this lense offers great range but it is simply soft and not really sharp at 200-300mm range. That makes it basically a workable 70-200mm lense.
- IS works good but not great.
- The USM technology on this lens if I remember correctly is an older model of USM, so it is not super fast as well. Price around NT$16,000 is not too bad and in fact not expensive. However, if your take 200-300mm not workable into consideration then this canon lense is not a good deal at all.

3. Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS ----> out, but you can always borrow it from anyone who has it.
- This is an interesting lense because of its super price-performace ratio.
- Simply no one can ever find a lens at this price range performs better than this lens.
- To me, IS is worth more than NT4,000 already, hahaha.
- Focus speed on this one is simply too slow when compared to other options you have.
- IS works great on this lense and I even think this IS system works better than 70-300mm model.
- Extra 50mm compared to 70-200mm is desirable for your purpose of shooting flying jets in the sky.
- Priced at NT$6,000 +/- NT$500 is simply cheap to the bone. Weight of this lense is excellent and here your got yourself a champion in weight class.
- Once again, I want to address to you that weight is a super important factor taking picutres of fast moving jet in the sky. Too bad this lens does not have USM. Yeah, I know what a shame, right? So, although I love the price/performance ratio on this lens but this lens is certainly no good for your mission of shooting flying jets.

4. Tamron SP AF 70-300MM VC USD ---> RECOMMANDED for your Aero-Photography Mission.
- Sharp all the way from 70mm to 300mm. Here we value the range of 200-300mm more for our purpose of shooting jets.
- the USD is simply super sweet for this type of lenses. I personally believe it is as fast as my 15-85 IS USM lens from my own experience. My experience with fastest focus lens is my EF 85mm F1.8 USM if you want to know.
- VC is simply amazing on this new lens. It feels like it "glues" to the image in view-finder. Also, I find this new version VC is a lot better than my VC on B005e. My b005 shakes violently when VC is on. However, VC on A005 (70-300mm VC) only shakes very little. I would not say this VC gives me the same good experience with Canon IS but Tamron VC on this model does satisfy my need and my taste of VC. The best IS experience I have is with my 15-85mm IS USM if you want to know.
- Priced around NT$16,000 in my opinion is a well positioned marketing price. Believe me, you will say this price is cheap once you have tried it for a few days. I personally would pay as much as NT$20,000 for it if I knew VC and USD work so nicely on this sharp lens. The experience I have with this lens is simply amazing. BTW, I also give comment "cheap to the bone" to EF-S 55-250mmIS.
- Although this has nothing to do with the lens image quality but it is nice to know this lens is an annervisary lense from Tamron. YES, this SP AF 70-300mm Di VC USD is authentic Tamron 60th Year ANNERVISARY LENS. Now, this is something nice to have, don't you think?

It has been a pleasure for me to share my personal experience of shooting iron bird with you. Just want you to know that I had a lot of funny experience and embarassing stories of shooting iron birds. Believe or not, sometimes I do believe LUCK is very important when it comes to shooting iron birds. I stop shooting iron birds after I have kids and I simply love to take pictures of my family and my parents. That is why I really value a lot if any lens is also a good portrait lens.

Please, do have fun with your camara and lens on shooting flying jets. Bring your family or friends with you and share your knowledge of airplanes with them. Please remember, no single picture is more important than your family members or loved ones.
