This will not protect your notebook, only the harddrive. The harddrive cannot function without the password.
Remember, it's a function provided by the harddrive, not by the computer, it's not possible to "reset" the password by emptying the bios, or similar. The only way to make your notebook operational after a theft would be popping a new hard drive inside.
The password is asked everytime you boot (a complete shutdown, or hibernation will ask for the password)
It is not asked when you go in the bios (but you need the old password to change the drivelock password!)
You can use a BIOS password, plus a drivelock password. They can be different. That way, you protect both the hard drive and the whole computer (the bios password can be reseted tho)
Hope that helps

目前查到的,
對 harddrive 還沒救 ^^"

結論一樣是沒救.....
不過有列出3個解決的辦法:
1) Knowing the password.
2) Hacking the password.
3) Tearing the drive apart and using specialized equipment to read the data off of the platters."
以第3個方法,
可能就是需要花錢解決問題了,
看資料量的大小囉,
上1~3萬跑不掉......

Help me My hp pavilion ze4900 asks for Drivelock password
I've got one for you guys. Have a Compaq Evo N610c laptop with Toshiba hard drive. The BIOS/System/Drivelock passwords were NEVER set- in fact there wasn't even a Windows password. The system got a few viruses that coulnd't be removed by the antivirus software that was in there- so I pulled the drive and hooked it up to a USB adapter on my desktop. The desktop recognized, I scanned it and removed several viruses and then did a spyware scan too. NOW, when I put it back into the laptop, it's asking for the Drivelock password- which there isn't one. Also, if I try to hook it back up to the USB adapter or even connect it to the IDE bus with an adapter internally, the platters are locked- so I can no longer get any of my data off the drive. You guys ever see this sort of thing? I'm willing to try most anything now to be able to get my pictures off the laptop drive.

DriveLock is a security feature that provides advanced protection against unauthorized access of data on hard drives.
DriveLock is based on the industry standard ATA-5 specification. The standard uses a dual password structure featuring a master and user password. The master password allows supervisory control over DriveLock features. It enables unlocking of protected hard drives and provides the ability to change the user password. The user password gives the user access to protected hard drives as well as the ability to change the user password.
Note: DriveLock settings are accessible only when you access the Setup utility by turning onâ”not restartingâ”the computer.
Caution! Once a DriveLock password is set, a hard disk drive can be accessed by using only that password. There is no recovery procedure if the password is forgotten.
Caution! Once a DriveLock password is set, a hard disk drive can be accessed by using only that password. There is no recovery procedure if the password is forgotten.
Let's see how the Drivelock password works:
When the drive determines that it is locked, it only accepts a few, specific commands:
Identify - Allows the computer to determine the drive type/model and BIOS CHS/LBA settings.
Unlock - Allows the computer to supply the unlock password to the drive.
Secure Erase - Allows the computer to zero-fill the device AFTER having supplied the correct password to the drive.
Since the drive itself will not accept any other commands while it is locked, it is impossible to read/write the data on the drive without:
1) Knowing the password.
2) Hacking the password.
3) Tearing the drive apart and using specialized equipment to read the data off of the platters."
The locking is a partnership between the original laptop BIOS and the individual drive and is very, very secure. This is the reason we may not be able to remove the drive lock password.
