There’s been a lot of talk in the media this week about a recent governmental report that says the GPS system may fail next year.
These reports are false, and we are doing all that we can to combat them. Additionally, the U.S. Air Force (who administers the GPS constellation) held an online press conference that assured the public that it has measures in place to prevent any gaps in coverage.
1.Garmin and its customers both want interruption-free GPS services – satellites that are built and commissioned by the United States government.
2.Our national defense, transportation grid, first responders, and hundreds of millions of everyday consumers all rely on GPS for safety and convenience.
3.We believe that it’s not realistic for the government to allow outages in the GPS grid, particularly during a time of war and recession.
4.There are numerous redundancies in the GPS network that would mitigate the effect of any outage.
5.We have urged those in charge of maintaining the GPS constellation to work together rapidly and cost-effectively to ensure that GPS service is uninterrupted. We firmly believe there is no reason to fear a significant or serious outage in service.
