HP Develops Three-Way Wireless PDA
The likelihood that Hewlett-Packard Co will launch a PDA featuring three types of wireless connectivity in the near future has gained credibility after a Gartner Inc analyst leaked details of such a device at the recent Consumer Electronics Show.
Analyst Todd Kort told attendees at a presentation at the show that the device, apparently named the iPaq h6300, will feature GPRS, wireless LAN and Bluetooth access. This is in line with earlier expectations for the much-mooted iPaq h6000 series, which was first rumored last October.
Devices in the h6000 series are expected to feature quad-band GSM/GPRS connectivity, making them suitable for use on any such network worldwide. They will inevitably use the rarely adopted Phone Edition of Microsoft's Windows Mobile software for Pocket PCs. Interestingly, HP abandoned an earlier version of the software in early 2003, labeling its Jornada 928 model "an experiment with mixed results".
Current opinion of the h6000/h6300 devices is that they may use Texas Instruments' WANDA (wireless any network digital assistant) reference design, first shown last March.
